Welcome

The English Schools Fell Running Championship is a single day event for secondary schools and sixth form colleges.
  • There are 4 races for years 7, 8/9, 10/11, 12/13.
    Please see the Rules page for eligibility definitions.
  • The event is pre-entry only. There are no entries on the day.
  • Substitutions are permitted, but only within the same year category, e.g. year 8/9 boy for year 8/9 boy.

Rules

Rules:
  • The Championships are run under FRA Rules.
    They can be found here.
  • Eligibility for each race is determined by age at the end (31st August) of the school year in which the event takes place.
    Note: it is NOT determined by the school year, for which the student is registered.
  • The next event will take place after Saturday 31st August 2024 in school year 2025.
  • All competitors must wear shoes that are suitable for running on steep grassy descents with good studs, preferably fell running shoes or orienteering shoes.
  • Competitors may be asked to carry a waterproof/windproof jacket in case of extreme weather.
Awards:
    Individual
  • There is a Boys and Girls Category for each Race.
  • Prizes are awarded to the first 3 finishers in each category.
    Note - under UKA rules there cannot be a tie in a fell race.
    Finish line marshals are a judge of fact and their decision is final.
  • The top 10 in each category can download and print a certificate.
Awards:
    Team
  • Team prizes are awarded to the first 3 teams in each race category.
  • A team consists of 3 runners.
  • Points are awarded as per the position in each race category,
    i.e. 1st = 1 point; 2nd = 2; 3rd = 3 etc.
  • The points for the first 3 finishers in each category for each school are added together.
  • The school with the lowest cumulative score is the winner.
    In the event of a tie the team with the highest placed third counter wins. This is consistent with FRA rules.
  • The top 3 teams in each category can download and print a certificate for their school.
    Overall School
  • To qualify for the Overall School Prize a school must start runners in 3 different categories.
    This allows comprehensives, prep schools, sixth form colleges, single sex schools and all others to compete evenly.
  • The school's best 4 positions are determined, regardless of category. The points are determined from the positions and these are added together. The lowest score wins.
  • In the event of a tie, then the team with the highest number of 1st places wins, then 2nd places and so on, e.g. if a Team A has (1, 2, 2, 4) = 9 and Team B has (2, 2, 2, 3) then Team A wins because of the 1st place.
  • The top 3 schools can download and print a certificate.

Entries

On Race Day

A nominated representative of each school must:
  • Collect the complete pack of race numbers and entry list from registration.
    Please don't ask for individual race numbers.
    This causes significant administration problems for the race organisers.
  • Inform registration of any non-starters and substitutions.
    The race numbers for non-starters must be returned to registration.
    Any substitute runners not notified to registration will be disqualified; this is a safety issue.
  • Distribute race numbers to the school's competitors and ensure that they wear the correct race number as allocated to them on the entry list.
  • Brief competitors on the safety rules for the event, in particular that non-finishers must report to the finish line.
  • Ensure that any safety kit required by the race organisers is carried by each competitor for the entirety of their race.
Competitor Check List:
  • Suitable fell or orienteering running shoes.
  • Running vest and shorts.
  • Correct race number as per the issued entry list.
  • Bad weather kit as defined by FRA rules and the race organiser.
  • Study race course.
  • Be ready for kit check and head count prior to race.
  • Change of clothes for post race.

Results

Certificates

  • These certificates are designed for placing in 8” x 6” picture frames.
  • It is recommended that the file is downloaded for opening and printing by a pdf reader, as the printing function on some browsers does not replicate the format accurately.
  • The certificates are best printed on A4 thin card, approximately 150gsm, and will require trimming.
  • Select the required type of certificate, and print the page(s) for you or your school.
  • You may need to adjust the printer settings.
